Funding
Prospective graduate students apply for funding from the History Department when they apply for admission. Available types of funding include fellowships, course assistantships, and associate instructorships. Typically the Department combines these various types of aid in a multi-year package that provides tuition and a stipend. Assistantships at the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies give some students tuition and a stipend. Advanced graduate students can also support their studies with positions at the American Historical Review. These positions also provide tuition plus a stipend.
Graduate students are also eligible for academic year or summer Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships offered through the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) and the Center for the Study of Global Change. Academic year fellowships cover tuition in addition to a stipend. Summer FLAS fellowships fund language study.
Pre-dissertation fellowships for summer research are funded by the Tinker Foundation through a competition that is also administered by CLACS. Mendel Fellowships also support graduate student research in Latin American studies.

The University Graduate School also offers Dissertation Year fellowships and pre-dissertation grants.
There are also fellowships offered through Indiana University's Office of International Programs.
Finally, our students in Latin American history have performed exceptionally well in national competitions for research grants. In recent years they have received two Fulbright-Hays Dissertation Fellowships, a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Institute for the Advanced Study of Religion Fellowship, an American Association of University Women Doctoral Fellowship, an Erasmus Institute Residential Fellowship, a Center for US-Mexican Studies Fellowship, an Institute for the Study of World Politics Fellowship, a National Hispanic Fund Scholarship and a James Scobie Memorial Award. Many of these grants support a full year of dissertation research or write up.
